One of the positives of VACANCY 2: THE FIRST CUT is that its existence suggests that the efficiently scary original, a box-office disappointment in theaters, found a wider audience on video—enough to encourage the production of this Sony Pictures direct-to-disc follow-up. Another is that as DVD sequels go, this one doesn’t shame its predecessor.

It no doubt helped that producer Hal Lieberman and scripter Mark L. Smith both returned for the second round. This is another in the reductive trend of prequels that attempt to explain just why their murderers do what they do, but for the first 20 minutes, Smith seems to be onto something as he traces the evolution of his villains from voyeuristic pornographers to snuff purveyors. Gordon and his buddy Reece have a profitable little side business going at the Meadow View Inn, secretly taping the sexual shenanigans of visitors and selling the cassettes. After playing a bit with our expectations for the first slaying, Smith introduces…Smith, a trucker who brings a hot chick to the Meadow View and winds up brutally knifing her, all captured on video before Gordon and Reece’s initially horrified eyes.

They want to turn Smith in, but he offers them a better option: Since sales of their unconsented-to amateur porn are flagging, why not switch to snuff? There are some nicely tense and well-played moments among these miscreants, and the movie would have benefitted from playing out this side of their interaction even further. But of course, the film really needs to center on a small set of young would-be victims, and Gordon and Reece agree a tad too easily to Smith’s plot just in time for recently engaged couple Jessica (Agnes Bruckner) and Caleb (Trevor Wright), along with the latter’s pal Tanner (Arjay Smith), to pull in to take a break from their late-night drive.

From here, the storyline pretty much writes itself, though Smith deserves credit for trying to mix things up a bit. Rather than center on the claustrophobic terror of besiegement inside the motel, as in the first film, he moves the action outside and even to the house of a neighboring couple. The presence of Tanner, who’s your typical smart-mouthed African-American buddy, proves not as annoying as such characters can tend to be, and his simmering disapproval of Jessica and Caleb’s impending union helps spice up the scenario’s tension a tad. On the DVD’s extras, Bross cites Paul Greengrass and city of god as influences, but fortunately VACANCY 2’s handheld camerawork avoids the jittery freneticism that has made similarly inspired films hard to watch.

All this may sound like damning with faint praise, and in the end, VACANCY 2 does eventually fall into its own trap of having to reprise what worked in its predecessor instead of truly breaking free into fresh territory. Yet on those terms, it has clearly been made with a little more smarts than usual, and stands above the flood of uninspired-to-wretched DVD follow-ups that genre fans have been subjected to in the last couple of years. The professionalism all around is reflected in the video/audio presentation, with a moody, high-contrast 1.85:1 transfer complemented by strong Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

It’s a pretty sharp product for a movie that, as revealed in the extras, was shot in only 19 days. Given the low budget, it’s also rather impressive that the filmmakers constructed a complete motel set to shoot in, the creation of which warrants its own featurette—revealing that while some of the buildings were fully crafted inside and out, others were mere facades . This segment contains the disc’s best anecdote, involving a YouTube video posted by a couple of kids who unwittingly broke into one of the fake-blood-streaked rooms. A separate making-of piece reveals more about the shoot and the design of the Meadow View—including the fact that the look of the latter took cues from, of all things, it happened one night.

On the DVD’s audio commentary, Bross makes further comparisons between VACANCY 2 and the classics NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and THE GODFATHER PART II, and it’s all rather highfalutin under the circumstances. But it does demonstrate that his heart’s in the right place, as does the fact that there’s more attention paid to the handling of the actors and their performances than usual on DVD-premiere talk tracks. The director is joined by Lieberman, executive producer Brian Paschal and stars Bruckner and Moscow, covering the shoot from all angles; Bross and Moscow have by far the most to say, while Bruckner is disappointingly quiet for the first hour. The DVD is rounded out by a brief collection of deleted scenes, including a moment of decision by Gordon that probably should have been left in.

Is the Air Inside Your House Safe For Your Family?

The EPA states that the cause of indoor air pollution stems from combustion pollutants such as gas, oil, coal, wood, tobacco products, building materials, furnishings, insulation that contains asbestos, cleaning or personal use products, damp carpet and lead-based paint.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency health effects from indoor air pollutants may be experienced soon after exposure or, possibly, years later.

Immediate effects may show up after a single exposure or repeated exposures. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. Sometimes the treatment is simply eliminating the person's exposure to the source of the pollution, if it can be identified.

Symptoms of some diseases, including asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever, may also show up soon after exposure to some indoor air pollutants.

A booklet is prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to help you decide whether to take actions that can reduce the level of indoor air pollution in your own home.

The air fresheners we use release such toxins, also. Do you use or have any of these items in your home? Of course, we all do!

Other pollutants include viruses and bacteria that are spread by people and animals. Cats and dogs or other pets spread bacteria through their saliva and dander. Of course, the pollen in the air causes allergies which come from plants, indoors and out.

The dried urine from mice, rats or roaches produce an allergen that permeates the air and causes respiratory and other problems. Dust mites, which produce allergens, live in warm moist places such as mattresses, bed sheets, cloth furniture, curtains and carpets.

And, as you know, mold and mildew breed in damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens and water damaged materials. Indoor air purifiers can virtually eliminate that problem for you!

Many diseases and other health issues are brought on by these indoor air pollutants. Colds, flu, coughing, sneezing, itchy watery eyes, yes, respiratory problems, such as asthma, nasal congestion, sinus infections, chicken pox, measles, and digestive problems can all be the result of pollutants.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your family?

- There are many things you can do to help prevent and eliminate your home of pollutants:

- If anyone smokes make sure they go outside

- Kill dust mites by washing your sheets weekly in hot water.

- Dust furniture regularly

- Fix any leaky pipes immediately to prevent mold and mildew

- Improve ventilation in your home by opening windows to allow fresh outdoor air to come inside.

- Make sure exhaust fans for the bathrooms and over the stove are working properly.

- Be sure that dryers vent outside instead of inside a garage or laundry room.

- Reduce or eliminate the use of aerosol sprays or toxic chemicals for cleaning. Use natural products such as vinegar and peroxide, rubbing alcohol or baking soda instead.

House Painting Tips - Condition Your Skin While Removing Oil Base Paint

When I started my house painting and repair business 26 years ago, I used to purchase solvent based hand cleaners to remove oil based paint from my hands. Many hand cleaners use mineral spirits or other chemical based agents as part of their formula. These chemicals are very hard on skin. After a few years, my hands started looking very rough and became hyper sensitive to solvent base cleaners.

Solvent based hand cleaners did a pretty good job of removing oil based paint, but at the expense of poor quality skin. After developing problems with my skin, I switched to using citrus based hand cleaners and found that citrus based hand cleaners were an improvement. They actually cleaned my skin about as well as the solvent based cleaners. Citrus based hand cleaners were less caustic to my hands.

However, after a few years of using citrus cleaners, I became allergic to something in the cleaner. Perhaps it was the citrus extracts themselves. I don't know for sure.

One day when painting around my home using oil base paint, I decided to try using baby oil to clean the paint off my hands. Why not try baby oil and see if it will remove oil base paint. Therefore, I applied baby oil to my hands and started rubbing the oil into my dry skin and found that the oil base paint was dissolving. I applied the baby oil 3 or 4 times to my hands and rubbed it into my skin before rinsing with water. Then I dried my hands very well and applied it one more time to remove any residual paint. When I was done, my skin felt soft and conditioned.

I have to tell you, using baby oil was a vast improvement over anything I had ever used before, and it's all I've used for years.

Sometimes the simplest things sitting right under your nose turn out to be the best solution to your problem.

Remember these key points before using baby oil. Do not wet your hands before using baby oil. If you wet your hands first, the water will repel the baby oil rendering it useless. Be sure and apply the baby oil 2 to 3 times to your hands wiping with a dry paper towel between applications. When the paint is desolved, rinse with soap and warm water. Work the baby oil into your skin and within two shakes of a cat's tail, you will notice the oil based paint will start dissolving. Wash and then dry your hands well. If you see any residual oil paint then reapply the baby oil.

Baby oil doesn't clean quite as fast as your solvent based hand cleaners, but who cares when you can avoid having your skin look like tree bark.

Solar Energy Systems Made of Component Parts

The module structure is designed to protect the solar cells from the environment. It consists of a number of layers to protect the circuit of solar PV cells and to make the module easy to install. The materials used in these layers determine the cost and durability of the modules.

The solar cells themselves and their circuits are totally wrapped in plastic. A shock resistant, shatter proof glass covers the solar PV cells and provides a clear, low absorption cover for the solar panel. It is also tempered for strength in order to reduce the effects of falling trees or hail. The multi-layered back sheet protects the plastic and cells from abrasions and prevents moisture from getting into the module.

An edge seal is applied to protect the edges of the glass from the infiltration of dirt, water, or other non-friendly substances. The metal frame is secured around the entire glass laminate. The all metal frame provides the structure and strength. It is the frame that is then bolted to the mounting system embedded directly into the roofing structure. Common Solar Module Design Types

There are three basic module solar designs. The first is the standard frame module that you may have experienced in the past. This design approach has been used for 30 years and usually involves an aluminum frame that allows the modules to be mounted onto a rail structure of some kind that is then directly attached to the roof. The modules are positioned above the roof surface, providing space for air to flow under the module, which helps cool the system and makes it work more efficiently.

At the same time, rain water, leaves, twigs, and other debris can also flow under the solar panels. Residential Roof Integrated Solar Energy Modules

A second type of module design is one that allows the module to be integrated into residential roofing materials. Systems connecting directly to the roofing materials (i.e. replacing shingles or laying flat to the roofing boards) are called integrated solar modules. The module frame design is modified so that it has the same profile as neighboring flat concrete tiles. The modules are not mounted to a rail structure but are attached directly to the roof surface. This low profile mount allows the module to blend in to the look of the roof and avoid the retrofit appearance of standard mounted solar energy modules.

The emergence of this more attractive roof integrated product has encouraged many production home builders to incorporate solar systems into their projects. This type blends in with the roofing materials and is attached directly to the roof surface.

Types Integrated Solar PV Panels

One is the mono crystalline ridged frame design offered by some existing manufacturers. The integrated solar cells have better through put and are gaining in efficiency all of the time. They also incorporate well into existing roofing materials like shingles and tiles. These solar cells use the same crystalline silicon technology as standard modules today. This set up has more mounting frame with fewer solar cells connected in series. The can result in a solar system that is a little more expensive. The other integrated solar cell product offered, by UNISOLAR, is a flexible amorphous technology. This type of solar panel is referred as thin film, sheet solar, or nano-solar. It is made to blend in with an asphalt shingle roof. It is somewhat less efficient, tends to degrade more quickly, and may have a shorter workable live spam. The manufacturer claims that this module is better in high shade situations.

Acne Fact and Fiction! Do Stress, Facials and Concealer's Help to Promote or Reduce Acne Breakouts?

What is Acne? People have differing opinions as to what acne really is. So, what exactly is acne? Do a couple of occasional but recurring zits qualify as a case of acne or do you have to have a lot of zits?

Believe it or not, the answer is that occasional pimples or zits do not constitute a true case of acne. Although zits do seem to have the ability to appear almost instantaneously and at the most inopportune times like picture day, prom night, spelling bees, sporting events, dates, and special award ceremonies, they are not a true acne outbreak.

The dictionary defines acne as "an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands, characterized by comedones and pimples, especially on the face, back, chest, and, in severe cases, by cysts and nodules resulting in scarring."

The anatomical definition of sebaceous glands is: "small subcutaneous glands usually connected with hair follicles. The follicles secrete an oily semi-fluid matter, composed in great part of fat, which softens and lubricates the hair and skin."

Real acne outbreaks are actually a disease of the skin. However, the great news is that acne is treatable. Although it can be very embarrassing, cause great emotional distress, and lower your personal self-esteem for a period of time, acne is not fatal.

There are new and effective treatments being sought by researchers and great advances have been made in the treatment of acne in the last few years. Years ago, when a person had acne, they were pretty much stuck with the problem. There were very few treatments available and the medical profession didn't even consider acne a disease.

It was long thought that acne was the direct result of a diet that was too high in fat and/or sweets. That is no longer the case. Acne is most often associated with puberty and the onset of pre-teen and teenage years but it can and does develop in adults as well. When acne does finally heal, there can be permanent scars left (from picking and popping) that are unsightly and cause patients to suffer long term emotional distress and low self- esteem.

New and very effective skin resurfacing treatments have been developed over the last several years that have, if not completely removed acne scars, at least diminished their appearance and severity.

Acne Fact or Fiction:

You can hear a lot of tall tales about acne today, so let's take a look at the fact or fiction of acne. It is always better to be well armed with factual information so that you don't get fooled by the fictional facts that surround acne.

Fictional Fact #1: Acne is caused by a lack of sexual activity.

Factual Fact: Acne and sexual activity are two entirely separate issues. One has no bearing on the other. Hormones secreted during puberty and young adulthood does have a bearing on acne. They also have a bearing on sexual arousal and activity. However, acne has no bearing on sexual activity nor does sexual activity have any bearing on acne.

Fictional Fact #2: People have acne because they are dirty.

Factual Fact: Dirt has no part in acne. Dirt is dirt. Acne is acne. One has nothing to do with the other. Acne is a build up of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Dirt isn't involved. Keeping the face clean can and will help to prevent clogged pores but dirt does not cause acne.

Fictional Fact #3: Dermatologists can cure acne.

Factual Fact: Dermatologists can TREAT acne. They can help to alleviate the symptoms and help to clear up the pimples, black-heads, and white heads. They can prescribe antibiotics and topical ointments, lotions, and creams that will help but there is no cure at this time for acne.

Fictional Fact #4: Acne is simply a skin problem.

Factual Fact: It's true that acne affects the skin but it can also affect the way a person sees himself or herself. Acne and the scarring it can leave behind may cause a sufferer to become depressed and develop low self-esteem, both of which can lead to larger and more complex life socialization problems. Acne sufferers need the loving support and reassurance from their family and friends.

Acne and Stress:

Can stress actually cause acne? There is ample evidence available to suggest that stress can most assuredly cause an acne breakout or make an existing breakout worse. Our bodies are highly developed chemical laboratories that produce all sorts of stuff.

At puberty, our body begins to produce an abundance of male hormones and this happens in both boys and girls. This overproduction of male hormones can happen at other times in life besides puberty; for example, when a girl or woman starting or stops taking birth control pills.

These male hormones cause the bodies sebaceous glands to shift into overdrive and begin producing sebum. The sebum then travels up hair follicles, clogs the pores and begins the acne development cycle. However, male hormones are not the only cause for the sebaceous glands to begin producing an overabundance of sebum. When we become extremely stressed or overly emotional, our bodies react by causing the adrenal glands to produce a substance known as Cortisol, which is released directly into the bloodstream. Then the chemical chain reaction continues as the sebaceous glands release sebum, the sebum travels up the same hair follicles, clogs the pores and acne develops.

The physical changes in the body can cause exactly the same chemical chain reaction as the emotional changes in the mind. The mind/body connection is very real. Maybe some of it really IS in your head. If that's the case, there is help available to help people deal with the acne that is caused by stress. Reducing stress will just naturally reduce sebum production by the sebaceous glands and reducing sebum production will help to alleviate an acne breakout. Therefore, when you learn to reduce and control you stress levels, this part of the chemical chain reaction is minimized.

It really it isn't any different than restoring a hormonal balance to your body that reduces sebum production. So, in the final analysis, both factors that cause excessive sebum production should be addressed. Solving one problem might help; however, solving both problems could eliminate acne altogether.

Acne Facials:

If you are part of the 95 of the population who suffer from acne, you have more than likely seen TV or print media advertisements for acne facials. Have you ever wondered if there is anything to the claims that their manufacturers make?

In general, the answer is yes! Most acne facials are very effective, pretty much worth the price, and can be used in conjunction with your usual acne fighting regime. They won't necessarily replace any part of what you are already doing; but, rather enhance the overall effects.

You can find acne facials in most health stores, at many cosmetic counters, and online. As a matter of fact, you can probably complete a better comparison of available products online than you can anywhere else.

Most of these acne facial products provide for a three-step program. The first step is a complete facial cleansing. The next step is a steam massage. The final step is a facial mask. The first two steps are designed to prepare the face. The steam massage softens the black heads and the white heads to remove toxins from your skin. The facial mask serves to remove the dead skin cells from the face and to moisturize it as well. The overall effect of the acne facial is a very relaxing, calming, and cleansing experience. It just plain feels good. Anything that helps to calm and sooth your stress can't be bad because we all know that acne is aggravated by high stress levels. Acne facial masks can be used in addition to other parts of your acne prevention and treatment regime or you may find that the facial can, in fact, actually replace some things that you are currently doing.

Acne Concealer's:

One of Newton's laws of physics laws says that, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." That law of physics spills over into a lot of our life situations. For example: A young woman gets a zit and wants to cover it up. The cosmetics industry has a multitude of products designed to do just that. Okay, that's a little far out there but you get my point.

The acne pimples, whether they are white heads or black heads should never be picked at or popped. If they are popped or picked, it can and normally does result is a scar that is much harder to get rid of than the actual pimple, black head or white head. Popping a pimple is not going to make it go away. In fact, popping a pimple is only going to make the acne worse.

Still when you get a zit, you have to go out and face the world so you are looking for ways to make your skin look clear. You want to disguise the zit and make it as unnoticeable as possible. You don't want to use a product that just adds to the problem by adding additional oil to already oily skin. 6) Utilize figures when necessary and not just ordinary and insipid statements.

Using specific facts and figures can heighten your article because it makes it authoritative. But do not make it too formal, it should be light and easy in them and flow. Like a friendly teacher having a little chat with an eager student.
